Allotment Growth

Allotment Growth

A little update on my allotment.

Allotment Update

Today I sowed (not "planted" apparently) some seeds into a new no-dig bed on my Exmouth allotment. I took over an allotment in February, and got pretty lucky as mine was pretty weed-free and near to the water tap.

I've been growing things, sowing haphazardly with a mix of no-dig beds and traditional dug-over ones. My no-dig beds certainly look livelier and hold the water better.

The biggest growers so far have been beetroot, rhubarb, lettuce and beans. It's been a pretty dry summer but as it's my first year actively growing I've got nothing in the past to compare it to.

Growing anything is a win!

Getting into new Rhythms

Although it's quite time-consuming I enjoy a few aspects of having an allotment.

Having the allotment means I'm outside a lot more, and have physical exercise from weeding, planting, harvesting and creating new beds.

I enjoy the long-term thinking and learning parts of it. Next year I'll attempt to do nearly all no-dig, plant with a bit more intention and idea of the veg I'd like to focus on.

And start getting into more complex aspects such as mulching, succession planting and a couple experiments such as hotbeds, green manure and more berries.

I'm not ready for a polytunnel yet!

Hope your garden or allotment is doing well!
