March is it's Own Season
At least in the UK, March has it's own rhythm.
Many Faces of March
March sits between Winter and Spring, or Winter and Summer if you're going by the two-season standard. I've been thinking that March can belong to either Winter or Spring/Summer in a particular year, but have concluded that it belongs in it's own season.
This morning I had coffee in a cafe, witnessing the many faces of March in the cycle of home -> walk -> cafe -> walk -> home. It tried tricking me with a sunny still view as leaving the flat, to reveal rainy clouds on the outside. A quick return for a coat was the lead into sun / rain walk, then watching sun / rain and then wind trying to take away cafe chairs. In the sun it can feel summery, then full on cold winter with a bit of cloud and offshore sea winds!
And that's not particularly unusual for a March day in the UK.
A Strange Time of Year
March is the same in it's time of year. It has no large defining events (except for International Guinness Day / Green / Patrick's Day) unless Easter has decided to come to play that year. Oh and part of it will be Lent but that's another nothing / everything / whatever festival / event. And if we're lucky Pancake day might fall in March. Oh and the Spring Equinox and the clocks changing (at least here in the UK).
It also sits in that time after winter, but before full-on spring and better weather. Lot of people are skint after winter / xmas season, but probably less skint that January. If you make New Years resolutions they've probably collapsed by now and you're planning what you actually want to do with your summer.
It's a time of Spring cleaning and change, reflection and actions, possibly school holidays, possibly not.
Winter, March, Spring, Summer, Autumn
So I've decided to name March as it's own season in my own little world. That probably won't have much effect, but I'm thinking of ways to make it it's own season.
This year it's been my month of re-organising, throwing out, transition between bedding down for winter and readying for more active lifestyle. In previous years it's been the moving month (2020 - selling house 3 days before covid lockdown, 2022 - Porto), the changing gear month (2021 post-winter lockdown, 2025 lifestyle decisions, 2012 leaving Exeter city research, 2018 post-Malaga winter, 2019 - DM's Guild).
Having March as it's own season could be interesting to mark it with something. Pancake Tuesdays all month, coffee outdoors month, re-org, new games season, trying things out... More thought needed for this...
And every year it's Birthday month!
Finishing Up
So welcome to the revised year of Winter, March, Spring, Summer, Autumn.
Any other months that should be their own Season?
